Just would like any info on this performance upgrade if anyone has had it done.

In answer to your question:

a) Don't bother until your warranty has expired, or you will have no warranty.

 Allegedly, it's an expensive trick, therefore don't bother at all.

Many threads on this....they should answer your question.

Besides, isn't it fast enough anyway?

Noy Galaxy relevant but I bought a Superchip for my Sierra 2.0 DOHC a good few years ago, it drove more smoothly but the power output dropped rather than increased . Superchips weren't too interested in sorting it out so I wouldn't be too keen to waste my money on another one.

I fitted one about a fortnight ago, the mrhoot.com beastie. Can't say what its done for my top end, I never go that fast anyway, but it has had an amazing effect on torque. I've a 90bhp diesel which I thought was a good hill climber, its now marvellous, also cruising seems a lot less stressed and theres a good bit of accelleration left if I want to overtake. And I got it for less than a hundred quid, better than having to budget for a 110 or 115 bhp.

At the end of the day it does little more than put a bit more fuel into an oxygen rich enviroment, bringing the actual mixture closer to lambda. If the same block can handle 150 bhp (Golf GT TDI) upwards, what detrimental effect is it going to have?

If it's so easy and so good, why wouldn't the manufacturer who designed the whole system do it anyway ???? There's no such thing as a free lunch, there has to be some detriment. Most of the chips I've seen do little more than modify the throttle curve and over fuel by fooling the temperature sensor.

You've been reading my piece...

Manufacturers spend months optimising the ECU settings for each engine and vehicle application.

Some oik with a laptop and a secondhand rolling road fiddles with a few parameters in a day and flogs

And your point is? :D Seriuosly, I bought it to try it, I like it, it's staying. I'm not trying to foist it on you, so where's the problem? ;) I blow my Car up that's down to me, next you'll be telling me what colour underwear to wear (if any B) ). This is tongue in cheek, I have no problem with what you say, I just think differently (and before you start I do have the occasional thought :o ).

Did like your idea re the Passat V6 TDi engine and the cooked Galaxy, if you do end up doing it I would love to know the result.

guy's,

I am all for improving performance and economy however if it aint broke don't F**K it. Very exspensive, complicated and has agreat potential to go wrong. Not like it used to be on the older cars with Carbs rather than ECU controled EFI, you could swap your air filter and change the jets to get these results but at the end of the day is it worth it. I have friend that has 150bhp gold and had it reprogrammed to 194 bhp (same engine as Galaxy) it cost him

I agree 110% with S.A. Intruder and the american saying "There's no substitute for cubes" could not be more relevant. It is my firm belief that these so called superchips are a con, it would be interesting to see on a rolling road the REAL rather than the perceived gains.

Has anyone who have fitted these 'brilliant' devices done real tests ? i.e. 0-60 times before and after chipping ?

John,

your comment on throttle behaviour is also valid.

The normal curve (the relationship between the throttle potentiometer and the power demand interpretation) is not linear in the stock vehicle.

It is generally pseudo-logarithmic, meaning that small throttle pedal angles produce very small power demands. As the pedal angle is increased, the power demand increases at a continuously greater rate.

What some sh*tchips do is exaggerate the power demand at the small throttle openings, kidding the driver into believing that the engine is suddenly more lively. Effectively, they linearise the power demand against the throttle angle.

And with drive by wire engines, it's dead easy.

That'll be

Cubes = Cubic Inches

Engine Volume measured imperially

Big V8, Big Power, Huge torque

Posted

i chipped mine 4 months ago , not bothered about top speed,(being auto) made the drive smoother, increased economy now getting about 540 to 560 to a tank and middle to late thirties to a gallon.

The point being made is everybody has a free choice, yes you may need a new turbo quicker in the long run., but if you accept that so be it. one of our friends had his galaxy chipped 160 thousand miles ago and has never had a problem,by the same score we have recovered 2 52 plates with blown turbos and less than 12000 miles, its swings and roundabouts.

Not sure why you would need a turbo quicker...?

My wife buys herbal this and that 'cause she believes they do her good.

"And big thirst, big wallet, big arse, big ego etc need I go on? "

I should make it clear that I was refering to SAIntruder's cubes=cubic inches message, not about his wife buying herbal this and that.

No offence meant SAIntruder, hopefully none taken.

HI

I must add to this one, this statement is made is made without prejudice to anyone and is purely my opinion!! (my only qualification is that I am a research engineer in the aviation sector)

I fitted a tuning box at 25000, (my Sharan has done 115200 at the mo). The unit cost some

I must admit I'm a bit dubious about these gadgets, though I've no facts to go on. But let's suppose shararnman's right and the manufacturer develops a fuel map that satisfies all people on all occasions. If you tweak that map to provide yourself with advantages in some circumstances, surely you're also going to create disadvantages in other circumstances? It's got to be swings and roundabouts, hasn't it? Otherwise, as others have pointed out before, why on earth wouldn't the manufacturer tune the engine to give the superior all-round performance that these gadgets claim?

Or maybe this is just sour grapes...
